So where do we get our seeds? The answer is, in fact, from all over the world. Most of our Heirloom seeds are grown by small US farmers but we also import some seeds from Italy and England. Italy has a history of growing heirloom varieties, so we are fortunate to be able to offer some wonderful Italian varieties.
We search for companies with quality seeds that we trust. We insist on high germination rates and seeds that we have had success growing in our own gardens.
We strive to make sure that each and every variety is an heirloom. Heirloom varieties are at least 50 years old. You can save your own seeds year after year and share them. But it’s more than that. It’s about a variety withstanding the test of time. It’s survived, seen diseases and different weather conditions. It’s developed resistances and hardiness through the seasons. It’s old and wise. It’s about varieties that were cherished by people who loved their gardens. It’s not about looking good on a store shelf or profitability. It’s about amazing flavor, nutrition, and a great gardening experience.
Our Organic Seeds are certified USDA Organic. Organic is a legal term, with definite rules as to how things are grown. Compost is the preferred fertilizer, with rules as to how it is made. There are a few approved pesticides, derived mostly from plants. Our Certified Organic Seeds are grown under these exacting conditions. They are then packaged under equally exacting conditions to ensure that all of the Organic seeds meet these requirements.
